The introduction of the use of ICD10 in the health system in Tanzania started in the year 2014 after the introduction of revised HMIS data collection tools and the use of DHIS2. Since the year 2014, Tanzania has been submitting annual mortality statistics to the Department of ICD 10 of the World Health Organization (WHO). Recording of mortality statistics using ICD-10 assists countries in analyzing disease patterns and trends and comparing morbidity and mortality across countries. Tanzania needs reliable knowledge on the mortality and causes of death of a population for critical policy making. Civil registration and vital statistics systems (CRVS), when functioning properly, are the most reliable source of continuous data on fertility, mortality, and causes of death. Cause-specific mortality statistics by age, sex, and geographic location, derived from such systems are instrumental in guiding national, regional, and global policies, and priorities for health and development. One of the most challenging products of the CRVS is cause-of-death information. The level of registration of deaths in some countries may be high but the information on the cause of death is often either absent or of low quality. Overall only around one-third of all the deaths in the world are recorded in civil registries with the cause-of-death information. There is a huge disparity in generating cause-of-death information across continents. The introduction of ICD-10 in Tanzania went hand in hand with the training of health staff in health facilities (hospitals, health centers, and dispensaries). The implementation of ICD-10 has been successfully implemented in the country with the collection and reporting of data by facilities, councils, regions, and national aggregate. The ministry would like to make use of the collected information to evaluate the mortality statistics in order to assist policy formation, decision making, and planning.
